They call this “Alvin’s Diamond Edition,” but I think that’s a “clever” marketing spin on the plot of the movie. Just one short ( The Brave Chipmunks) from the old 60s incarnation of the show. All the better to hear those rockin’ Chipmunks songs throughout. This movie came out 27 years ago? The audio was also fantastic. The colors are as crisp and clean as if the movie were made this year. They’ve never seen the original show, and they’ve never seen those recent CGI abominations.īut the day the disc arrived in the mail, I made time for us all to sit down and watch it together. Now, my kids aren’t really all that familiar with the Chipmunks beyond the Christmas song and the odd ornament we have on our tree. Because that’s what the world was clamoring for, apparently. Last week, I discovered that it was just released on Bluray. I remember loving it, but I didn’t remember a thing about it, except for the basic plot. That was the first and last time I saw The Chipmunk Adventure. We were in Florida visiting my grandparents, and I somehow convinced him to take me. Naturally, when a movie came out, I made my dad take me. I had nearly every toy available, and I watched the show whenever it was on TV. As a kid, I was a HUGE Alvin & The Chipmunks fan. Running time: 76 minutes. This was a pure nostalgia trip for me. At Embassy 4, Broadway and 47th Street 23d Street West Triplex, at Eighth Avenue 86th Street Twin, at Lexington Avenue. Bagdasarian released by the Samuel Goldwyn Company. TOOTHY CHARM - THE CHIPMUNK ADVENTURE, directed by Janice Karman written by Miss Karman and Ross Bagdasarian music by Randy Edelman produced by Mr. He was the composer of such novelty hits as ''Witch Doctor'' and ''Come on a My House,'' and both are included here. There is also an enjoyable dance number featuring animated cobras, and a couple of homages to Mr. The balloon trip means a lot of scenery, and children will doubtless enjoy animated glimpses of llamas, windmills, famous landmarks and so on. Parents may be surprised at the enthusiasm shown by both all-too-modern Chipmunk teams for that large cash prize. To get the Chipmunks to do this, the glamorous villains offer a $100,000 prize to the winner, and suggest that the boys compete against the girls. The Chipmunks are conned into embarking on an around-the-world balloon race, which is actually part of Klaus and Claudia's diamond-smuggling operation. And they soon fall into the clutches of a pair of evil foreigners named Klaus and Claudia. The Chipmunks are left alone when Dave Seville, their human guardian, goes on a trip abroad. Their supporting cast in this, their first feature film, includes three ponytailed girl Chipmunks and an extremely adorable baby penguin. The Chipmunks - the ringleader Alvin, the brainy Simon and the always-hungry little Theodore - are a lot less saccharine than the Care Bears, and they behave like real boys. However, if its visual sophistication is slight, it has other charms. It is animated in standard Saturday-morning cartoon style, so that the non-Chipmunk characters look lifeless and the backgrounds never move. ''The Chipmunk Adventure'' is the work of Ross Bagdasarian - son of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., the Chipmunks' original creator - and his wife, Janice Karman. And for both there is music, including a Chipmunk-style rendition of ''Woolly Bully'' and a nice, sentimental hymn to Mother. For the children, there are pleasant, colorful Chipmunks on a round-the-world tour. For the parents, there are references to high finance, bored jet-setters and Pierre Cardin socks. WHAT sort of film walks a thinner line than the animated children's musical, catering as it does to two such disparate age groups, each so easily bored? At least ''The Chipmunk Adventure,'' which opens today at Embassy 4 and other theaters, tries to interest both parents and children and does a reasonably good job.
